AN EXPLORATION OF RED VARIETALS
A BENEFIT FOR FORT SALEM'S YOUTH EDUCATION PROGRAM

Tickets have now gone on sale for Fort Salem Theater’s Christmas fundraising gala, Wine, Woman, and Song, to be held in the Fort’s cabaret room Saturday evening, December 12, at 5:30 PM.

Wine authority David G. Howell will host an Exploration of Red Wine Varietals, including tastings and hors d’oeuvres, and will be joined by Lynne Kerr, who will sing about wine, women, and men. Howell is the co-author, with his longtime colleague Jonathan Swinchatt, of The Winemaker’s Dance, Exploring Terroir in the Napa Valley, published in 2004 by UCB Press and available for purchase at the event. In reviewing the book, Rod Smith, a columnist for Wine and Spirits Magazine, wrote: “Engaging, lucid, substantive, with colorful characters, brand new theories, and the momentum of a detective story … hard to put down … a fascinating trip to the heart of Napa Valley terroir.”

With an undergraduate degree from Colgate University and advance degrees from the University of California, Dr. Howell has recently retired as a geologist with the United States Geological Survey and as professor of Earth Sciences at Stanford University. His research at the USGS involved studies on the growth and shaping of continents, the worldwide distribution of oil and gas, the impact of crowding on the Pacific Rim and the role of art in communicating science. In addition to Stanford, he has taught at the University of Otago, University of Paris, and Nanjing University.

David Howell’s popular wine course at Stanford regularly enjoyed full enrollment. An accomplished artist whose work has enjoyed exhibitions in Germany, France, and on both US coasts, Howell relocated this summer to Walpole, NH, where he has just opened the Gallery at Howell Farm and is a member of the Walpole Artists’ Coop.

Lynne Kerr, whose voice has been compared to a mellow Merlot (favorably), is a favorite in the Salem cabaret, where she is sometimes recognized as the wife of Fort Salem’s artistic director. Her cabaret shows, Songs My Husband Wrote and More Songs My Husband Wrote, have played to sold-out rooms in Manhattan and Salem. The wine tasting musical event will be held in the Cabaret at Fort Salem Theater where seating is limited and, for this special event, reservations required.

Proceeds from the gala, with single tickets at $40/$75 for a couple, will go to the theater’s Youth Education program, which in two successful summer seasons has given local youth the opportunity to work with professionals from Broadway and regional theater.
